I understand ESPN wants to bring you the latest news as it happens, in fact I applaud them for that. ESPN has brought about great changes to the world of sports coverage and has helped to shed the light on all types of sports better then Obscure Sports Quarterly. But when did ESPN turn into US Weekly? Take the Alex Rodriguez incident for example. In a matter of hours he goes from being the anointed savior of baseball to being as hated as Jack Parkman in "Major League II."

We all saw the breaking news scroll across the ticker: "Alex Rodriguez admits to using steroids, interview with Peter Gammons on SportsCenter at 6". However, it was all downhill from there. Later it was: "Alex Rodriguez says cousin introduced him to banned substances." Then it became: "Alex Rodriguez's cousin identified as Yuri Sucart". Then: "Alex Rodriguez seen leaving spring training game with Sucart behind the wheel". The latest one: "Sucart's wife to hold press conference outside their home in the Dominican". Whats next: "Alex Rodriguez goes through Burger King drive-thru, orders a #7, extra cheese"?

I understand that as a media organization you want to be the first one to break the story. Heck, I spent 4+ years of my life doing just that for my campus news outlets. But there is a big difference between breaking news and "following the ambulance to the scene of the crash".

Give ESPN some credit though, because they understand that to keep their viewership at the high it is currently, they have to be the first on the scene. And as long as we live in a "what can you do for me now" society -- if you're important enough -- everything in your life is fair game.

Oh, and to prove I don't make this stuff up, just coming across the ticker on ESPN: "Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen are married". Really only one thing that needs to be said, SCHWING!
