Tiger Woods is no longer good for the survival of golf
Tiger Woods made his return to the PGA tour this weekend at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship -- and the golf world finally exhaled. However, before they were could finish that collective sigh of relief, he was gone. Eliminated, Cinderella Man no more. Much to the pure shock of ESPN, who had to stop with the breaking news ticker stating every time Tiger wiped his nose, and the absolute anger of NBC officials who went "all in" with their hopes that Tiger would make it to the weekend so that someone would actually watch.
Which made me wonder, "Is Tiger Woods good or bad for golf?"
Steve Elling from CBSsportsline.com wrote a article about
Tiger coming to golf's rescue, which again made me wonder, "If Tiger is the only reason people care or watch golf what happens when he walks away? Can golf survive? Mike and Mike spent a segment today talking about Tiger's impact on the game. Tournaments in which Tiger plays in have, on average, a 48% viewer increase over those that he does not. Now, that's Carl Spackler levels.
Is he too good for the game? If people are only watching when he plays, then what future does the game of golf have? Tiger is 32 and has had 3 severe surgeries, putting more stress on his body then Richard Simmons. He can't play forever, folks. So I have come to this conclusion: Tiger Woods is no longer good for the game of golf. Golf can not survive without Tiger and needs someone to step up to fill his shoes.
Sure, they will get a few more good years out of him, but sooner or later golf will have to do without the prodigal son. So I pose these questions to you: Can golf survive without Tiger? Is Tiger Woods no longer good for golf? You've heard my perspective, what say you, the masses?
