You may have heard by now (sarcasm), but Alex Rodriguez used steroids. Yup, for this guy, when it rains, it pours. Coming off of the revelations in Joe Torre's book, he now gets the knockout punch of being called out on using what we could probably now call PED's (performance enhancing drugs).
A-Rod's life has already been made into a soap opera, so why wouldn't we expect similar treatment with this story. We get questions about his legacy, Hall of Fame status, his numbers, and so-on and so-on. It's basically the same song and dance we get with any story like this, multiplying it times the tabloid appeal of the subject.
We also get to hear about who got the scoop. Sports Illustrated broke the news on their website (on a Saturday?) and ESPN countered with the exclusive "I did it" interview (broken up over the course of an hour-long Sportscenter. Sports Illustrated didn't waste any time touting themselves - having a Q&A with the reporter, Selena Gomez, who broke the story (read it here). As of Tuesday night, there were 14 links to different A-Rod-related stories on SI.com (couldn't resist using the double hyphen).
It seems like he tried to do right by actually saying he did use steroids, which in-and-of itself is miraculous considering how other notable players have handled it and how much the public usually craves this immediate acknowledgment. We won't hear much of that now -- just more criticism about what he is or isn't doing.
Settle in -- It's going to be a long baseball season... for all the wrong reasons.
