Logo for the WBC offers simple message, little glitz
I'm an unabashed fan of the World Baseball Classic. And while I realize most of the nation doesn't share my enthusiasm, I've been loving this year's tournament. It's really been the sport at it's purest; it's been about baseball, without the distractions of PEDs and contract disputes (sounds like the basis for another post).
But as much as I love the on-the-field action, when it comes to the logo for the WBC, I share the nation's indifference.
You can see it for yourself by
clicking here, but it's been so pervasive throughout ESPN's coverage that you're probably already familiar with the design. It features a bland baseball/globe combo in its center with multi-colored arcs wrapping around it. Arced text divided into three sections reads "'09 World Baseball Classic."
Really, it looks like a rejected concept for a
World Series logo. I can only assume the multiple colors are meant to express "diversity," in much the same way as the Olympic rings. The baseball/globe in the center seems contrite and the text lacks flow.
For an event that is still struggling to gain support during second go-round -- and is in dire need of excitement (that's the nation talking, not me) -- a more modern, streamlined, "sportsy" logo, like that of an NBA or MLB All-Star game would be the way to go.
