Coaching legends strip down for new commercial
Ever since Seger's piano chords first summoned a briefs-wearing Tom Cruise into his living room, the unforgettable scene from
Risky Business has been parodied to death. So much so, that when video-game phenomenon 'Guitar Hero' recreated the scene for a series of commercials, it was already bordering on cliché.
A foursome of college basketball legends in bleach-white tube socks have just slid it over the edge.
The game's
latest ad features coaches Roy Williams, Rick Pitino, Bob Knight and Mike Krzyzewski as a pantsless quintet. But before the roundball legends can finish the first verse, they're interrupted by Metallica, who are touting their version of the rhythm game. A heated stand-off between the two groups ends in equally-cliché fashion, as Knight chucks a drum set at the band.
Everyone from sports stars and supermodels to 'American Idols' have donned the tighty-whities for Guitar Hero, but when you're trotting out aging white guys (Pitino is the youngest at 56) in their underdrawers, you might want to starting thinking about putting the series to bed.
It almost sounds like an opening to
The Twilight Zone: "You are about to enter another dimension, a dimension where basketball coaches in their underpants sell music video games to the masses..."
I'll admit, the spot made me chuckle -- due mostly to the awkwardness of the whole thing -- but even the Metallica twist on this one isn't enough to revitalize the series. The commercials are actually starting to mirror the formula of the game's many sequels: Recycling the same moving parts, plugging in new names and faces.
