Checkdown Fantasy Baseball league completes draft
The first annual Checkdown Fantasy Baseball league drafted over the weekend. The eight-team Yahoo! league is comprised of Checkdown staffers Danny Nicklin, Anthony May, The Guru, Steve Turney and iMay, as well as three of our readers. While it probably won't be the most ground-breaking league ever assembled, we're certain we'll end up referencing it a time or two as our fantasy coverage rolls on. To that end, this post is just a quick look at the newly-built teams.
The first overall pick went to Anthony May (The Nuke LaLooshes), who opted for Albert Pujols. Florida's Hanley Ramirez went second, with the major first-round surprises coming in the 4th and 7th slots; Steve Turney (Star of Starz) opted for Manny Ramirez and the reader-owned Bernie's BAMFs (a big Braves fan, playing homer) opted for catcher Brian McCann, respectively.
Star of Starz nabbed A-Rod with his third-round pick, despite his projected May 15 return date. Injuries didn't damage the value of Phillies P Cole Hamels (Star of Starz - Round 5) or Twins C Joe Mauer (reader-owned Wild Thing's Buzz - Round 8).
Injured internet connections also factored into the draft. May missed his 2nd-5th picks with a connection error and ended up with both Evan Longoria and Aramis Ramirez. Danny Nicklin's Danny being Danny squad welcomed Corey Hart by accident in the 16th round, as well.
On the odd side of things, Round 14 was the 'Round of the Carloses' -- Zambrano, Marmol, Pena and Delgado were taken with the first four picks of the round.
