Owens leaves plenty of time to "getcha popcorn ready"
Terrell Owens has been
released by the Dallas Cowboys, as reported by Michael Smith of ESPN. The move has been the subject of speculation for some time, but was made official Wednesday night.
Owens' release comes just one year after the Cowboys signed him to a 4-year/$34 million deal, with $12 million in signing bonuses. Owens is known for his brash antics and "me first" attitude, but according to several statements by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, T.O. appeared to be safe... at least for the time being. Little did we know that "the time being" would be about a week.
This move will count against the Cowboys' salary cap, but let's examine it from a chemistry standpoint. Owens has been a distraction - more then a compliment - his entire tenure in Dallas. From the contract talks, to the "suicide attempt," and more recently the allegations of he and his teammates, Tony Romo and Jason Witten, drawing up plays for each other in their hotel rooms. Owens has just continued the same problems that have made him an ex-Niner, ex-Eagle, and now ex-Cowboy.
So is this addition by subtraction? I will leave that argument for the Fantasy Fix, but one can't help but wonder if the Cowboys can now begin to focus on winning games as opposed to working to make T.O. happy.
Now, former-Lion Roy Williams gets his chance to step into what could be the toughest role in the NFL - being the first option in the Dallas Cowboys' passing attack. This also means guys like Miles Austin, Patrick Crayton, and Isaiah Stanback now have to show a consistent increase in their production to make up for the loss of Owens.
What type of impact will the loss of T.O. have on the Cowboys? Did the Cowboys do the right thing? Where will T.O. land next? Time for some Post Game!
