It's been an unavoidable story all week - John Calipari leaves Memphis for Kentucky. An 8-year, $31.65 million dollar deal was enough to lure the top college coach to Lexington. Replacing the recently-canned Billy Gillispie, Calipari gets a chance to helm a legendary program, something he calls "a dream."

But what does UK get? More wins? Probably. A better recruiter? Certainly. But a more 'marketable' coach? That's what the Lexington Herald-Leader is reporting.

They chatted with Tom Stultz, senior V.P. at IMG College, who handles the University's broadcast rights, endorsements and appearances. According to Stultz, Calipari is "a nationally known coach with a great record and a marketable personality."

Stultz calls Gillispie an adequate spokesperson, saying "he did what he had to do and did it OK," but he's hoping for more from Coach Cal: "We would anticipate that a hire of an individual that captures the fascination of the hearts and minds of the Kentucky fan base would be very marketable."

There's no question that Billy Gillispie wasn't exactly a "charmer" -- we've seen his halftime interviews and other dealings with the media. Not that Cal hasn't insulted the media a time or two, but he's far more personable, and recognizable, than his predecessor.

All told, it's obvious that UK based their coaching change on performance: Gillispie was 40-27 in his two years at Kentucky, while Calipari was 71-6 at Memphis during that same span (not to mention his career 446-140 NCAA record). I believe Kentucky made a great move hiring Calipari, but you have to wonder if name-recognition and 'marketablility' were factored in.
