Gauging Cutler’s immediate fantasy impact
While it's way too early to tell what Jay Cutler's impact
will be in terms of wins and losses for the Chicago Bears, it's never too early
to look at his influence in the realm of fantasy. I mean, it is called fantasy football.
Obviously, the draft may change things even more, but with
'Da Bears forking over their 1st and 3rd round picks this
year (in addition to quarterback Kyle Orton and their 2010 1st round
pick), it's pretty safe to project what their starting lineup will look
like. So, here's a 'Pick Six' of
players who could be influenced by Cutler blowing into the Windy City.
1. Jay Cutler
(Bears QB)
Ok, this isn't anything
groundbreaking --
Cutler is a
top-notch quarterback in terms of fantasy value, throwing for over 4,000 yards
and 25 touchdowns last year.
He
also lacked any sort of legitimate running game and the defense was so quick to
give up points that Jay never lacked the chance to throw the ball around.
In Chicago, he adds a running game, a
respectable defense and a less than stellar set of wideouts.
All of that translates to less overall
fantasy value.
He'll still be top
10 QB though -- he's guaranteed to play the Lions twice a year after all.
2. Matt Forte
(Bears RB)
He made an instant impact as arookie last year, racking up over 1,200 yards on the ground and almost 500
yards receiving (12 total TD's).
Towards the end of the year, defenses started shifting their focus to
Forte, with declining productivity as the result.
Having Cutler under center should be enough to make
defensive coordinators think twice about putting eight in the box.
3. Brandon Marshall
(Broncos WR)
It'll be an interesting
side story to see how Marshall reacts to having either Chris Simms or Kyle Orton
(at this point) throwing him the ball.
Remember, this is the same guy who was third in the league in receptions
(104) and thought at times that Cutler wasn't giving him enough looks. I can't
imagine Marshall reproducing his reception and yardage (1,265) totals of
2008.
He won't be bad, but you
might want to reconsider him as your no doubt
#1 WR.
4. Chicago WRs
Who knows who'll end up as Cutler's favorite target, but he'll have fantasy value as soon as he reveals himself.
It won't be a one of the top-rate
receivers coming out of college (remember,
no 1st round pick), so
someone, be it Hester, Davis or some other relatively obscure receiver, will
have to step up.
You'll have to
pay attention during training camp to see if anyone has caught Cutler's eyes... and
passes.
5. Eddie Royal
(Broncos WR)
See Marshall, Brandon.
Royal had an impressive rookie
campaign, catching 91 passes for almost 1,000 yards.
He should also see a decline in fantasy production without
the rocket-armed Cutler looking his way.
6.The Denver QB
It's tough to tell who will be taking Mile-High snaps in 2009.
My hunch
is that the Broncos will use their newfound draft wealth to move up and grab
either Matthew Stafford or Mark Sanchez.
They'll have Orton start in '09, Simms as primary back-up and their
rookie holding a clipboard and studying up McDaniels' system.
If this scenario holds up, Orton could
actually improve his numbers (2,812 yards/18 TDs/ 12 INTs) with the previously mentioned dynamic duo split out.
