Video game brings Augusta to life, gamers to tears
Many would claim that
The Masters is the tournament of golf tournaments.
It's the major of majors. It's Augusta. It's Amen Corner and the Ben Hogan bridge at the No. 12 green. It's the green jacket.
Since 1934, many great men have slipped on the coveted green jacket. All-time greats such as Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Nick Faldo, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods are among the gentlemen to have worn the jacket more than once.
Fifty-five Americans have won the tournament. The lowest under par score of all-time was Woods' remarkable 18-under performance in 1997. Zach Johnson, in 2007, joined Sam Snead and Jack Burke, Jr., as the only players in history to win the tournament with 1-over par outcomes.
This year's champion could be an unknown. Yes sir, the 2009 field will be riddled with amateurs who can turn into professionals with just a few hours of practice. Because this year, thanks to ESPN.com's
"Putting at Amen Corner," even you can wear the green jacket (even if it is your bathrobe).
Personally, I am not a big video game guy, which could taint my opinion of the point-and-click simulation. I'm all for the idea of bringing Augusta to the millions of fans who will never experience the historical course, but this is a bad idea. The game is as equally stimulating as Mahjong or Pong.
Let's face it, in life, there are certain things you never do. Don't put tin foil in the microwave. Don't try to remake classic songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "MMMBop". You don't push the big red button, and you do not recreate boring sports in video games. The only fun golf video game would be one where you race golf carts around the course and the winner gets the beer cart and the girl.
I am excited for The Masters, especially in hopes of seeing some 18th hole drama on Sunday afternoon. But you won't catch me online trying to sink a putt to experience the majesty of Augusta.
Thanks, but no thanks. The only "amen" you get from ESPN.com's "Putting at Amen Corner" is the sigh of relief when the game is over or your browser crashes.
