Guarding Suton a tall order for UConn's Thabeet
The Final Four has two teams facing-off in one of my favorite match-ups. Michigan State and UConn are fighting for a chance to play in the National Championship, but their different styles of play could create chaos on the court.
The Sporting News is saying, "Michigan State needed the most impressive team performance of the tournament to get past Big East beast Louisville to make it home (OK, close to home) to Detroit, site of this year's Final Four. Now, the Spartans will have to get past an individual Big East beast -- Connecticut center Hasheem Thabeet -- if they want to get into the championship game."
Michigan State will play with pride and passion, while UConn will bring the raw talent that Jim Calhoun has brought to the University of Connecticut. In the eyes of the viewer, Connecticut should absolutely run away with this game, but Michigan State has every chance to win.
The tournament MVP this year, without a doubt in mind, is Goran Suton. Suton -- at 6'10 -- should create some problems for the normally-feisty Huskies. The Spartans play a perimeter offense where the center stays at the free-throw line and is used to keep the lane open and run simple give-and-go plays. But making it more dangerous is the fact that Suton can shoot lights-out from behind the arch.
The Huskies, of course, have the soon-to-be All American in Hasheem Thabeet. He is basically a city skyscraper. Standing at 7-3, Thabeet will need to have a lot more energy to play against the 3-point-shooting Suton.
The talent that surrounds Thabeet should be overwhelming for Michigan State, but we have seen this situation time and time again.
Disagreeing with the Sporting News, I think this time around Thabeet has a bit of a challenge --- playing on the outside with the best three-point-shooting center of this year's tournament. Though I am on the wagon that points to Connecticut, don't be so quick to jump on. Michigan St. may have just enough.
Is the March Madness going to hit in April? What kind of Defense will UConn play with Suton out on the perimeter? Does Michigan St. have the talent to defeat Uconn? Let's start the conversation.
