In honor of tonight's Midsummer Classic, we'll be featuring a two-time All-Star in this, the first edition of "The Name Drop."

A rookie in '87, Ron Gant played a major role in the Atlanta Braves worst-to-first season in 1991. He was a two-time 30/30 clubber ('90 and '91) and currently ranks 97th on the all-time home runs list with 321.

The Highlights
  • Two-time NL All-Star selection ('92, '95)
  • Silver Slugger Award winner (1991)
  • 117 RBIs in 1993
The Lowlights
  • Called-out on controversial Kent Hrbek tag in '91 W.S.
  • Missed '94 season after breaking his leg in an ATV accident
  • Struck out 162 times in 1997
  • One of three batters Goose Gossage has admitted to hitting intentionally

Gant retired in 2003 after unsuccessful stints with Anaheim, Colorado, San Diego and Oakland (twice). He's currently an analyst during Braves broadcasts on SportsSouth.

The Name Drop is a regular feature on The Checkdown, wherein we drudge up the names of gone-but-not-entirely-forgotten athletes using Wikipedia, the home of all useless (and unverified) internet knowledge, as our primary source. Randomly inserting a name from this feature into any sports conversation should turn heads and possibly illicit laughter. Submit your favorite name to drop to admin@thecheckdown.com. We'll give you props, promise.
