Vick, Nike: On again, off again
Vick's potential Nike deal has media spinning circles
By Anthony May|Posted 10.01.09

Why in the world would Nike want Michael Vick on their roster of spokesballers?

That's probably the question that most were asking yesterday, when word from Vick's agent indicated that the troubled QB was back with Nike. As a matter of fact, that's a question Nike ended-up asking themselves... eventually answering, "We don't."...

A Simms family tea party
Football father and son duo pushing green tea?
By C.L. Lovett|Posted 07.06.09

Recently, I was perusing through a semi-new Sports Illustrated and came across an advertisement featuring Phil and Chris Simms on a golf course, apparently drinking Bigelow brand green tea. The print for the add read, "Look who's drinking Bigelow Green Tea now."

Well.....YEAH! Of course they do. Chris probably had green tea in his IV after he had his spleen removed....

Mercury losing their identity
WNBA teams look for revenue with jersey sponsors
By Anthony May|Posted 06.01.09

I can just hear the PA announcer now, "Introducing your Phoenix Life... uh... Mercury!"

With an announcement on Monday, the Phoenix Mercury did all but change their name to match their new jersey sponsor, LifeLock. The WNBA franchise introduced a new partnership with identity-theft protection company LifeLock, which will see the company's logo replacing "Phoenix" and "Mercury" on the team's game-day duds....

Too good to be blue
Greinke's promise nothing new for Royals
By Anthony May|Posted 05.05.09

So, Zack Greinke is good.

His 6-0 record, 0.50 ERA and 44 Ks have the baseball world buzzing. But there's something about this scenario that says it isn't built to last.

The Royals have a nasty history of dealing great players in horrible trades. Is Greinke next?...

New Turner Field sponsorship creates spectacle
By Anthony May|Posted 04.07.09

When the Atlanta Braves take the field for their home-opener on Friday, they'll be greeted by the Washington Nationals, 50,000 fans and 40-foot-tall cow.

Outlandish sponsorships are nothing new to baseball -- who can forget the "Spider-Base" incident of '04 -- but this 15,000-pound, tomahawk-chopping addition to Turner Field is pushing stadium advertising into uncharted territory....

Calipari UK's new 'spokesman'
Calipari will be 'Mr. Marketable' as new Kentucky coach
By Anthony May|Posted 04.01.09

It's been an unavoidable story all week - John Calipari leaves Memphis for Kentucky. An 8-year, $31.65 million dollar deal was enough to lure the top college coach to Lexington. Replacing the recently-canned Billy Gillispie, Calipari gets a chance to helm a legendary program, something he calls "a dream."

But what does UK get? More wins? Probably. A better recruiter? Certainly. But a more 'marketable' coach?...

NFL practice field may be next ad opportunity
By Danny Nicklin|Posted 03.26.09

Practice. Yup, they're talking about practice. Jerseys that is.

I caught a post from profootballtalk.com (PFT), which was referencing a blog entry by Jim Colbert of USA Today (what, you think I have time to actually report this stuff myself?) saying the NFL was expanding their sponsorship horizons in terms of adding corporate logos to practice jerseys....

Vitaminwater makes a splash at NCAA Tournament
By Anthony May|Posted 03.24.09

When the final seconds roll off the clock at this year's Final Four, the winning coach need not fear the Gatorade shower; He should be on the lookout for a cooler of Vitaminwater.

After a dodging a potential PR-nightmare a few weeks back, Vitaminwater has flipped the script and become a multimillion-dollar sponsor at this year's NCAA Tournament....

Broncos QB, coach air out differences in the press
By Danny Nicklin|Posted 03.16.09

Well, everyone has put their oysters on the table. Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler and new head coach Josh McDaniels are playing a slick game of chess with, you guessed it, multiple media members as their pawns in efforts to win over the ever-so important court of public opinion in their "he said, he said" debate.

Danny Nicklin delves into the media circus surrounding the Mile High drama....

Deal keeps LT in San Diego
Chargers keep a good player, shock the media
By Anthony May|Posted 03.12.09

You'd think that when a team keeps a running back that's rushed for over 1,100 yards in eight consecutive seasons it wouldn't be considered shocking news, let alone a mistake.

But that's exactly what's going down in San Diego now that the Chargers have restructured the contract of LaDainian Tomlinson....
